This tool will help you calculate how toxic your products are

February 2, 2016

Ignorance is bliss. We go through our days unaware of the pollutants and toxins surrounding us. They’re in the air, the water we drink, the food we eat and the products we use on our bodies. If I told you there was a tool that would keep you informed of the hazard levels of all the products you purchase, would you use it?

The Environmental Working Group does just that, and is one of my favourite resources for healthier living. It is a non-profit organization aimed at researching how humans and the environment can become healthier. They take their findings and publicize them for all to see on their website at no cost. Knowledge is power!

One of my favourite tools they have designed is called EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetic Database. This page provides a search bar for you to type in the name and company of a product and it will rate its hazard level. It can also provide you with some of the dangerous ingredients found in the product if that information is available.

Many natural products have also provided their information for EWG to use so you are able to confirm that this product is indeed a good choice for your health. You will see that some of the products I show you over time will have the EWG stamp of approval on their website. This means that they have received a low hazard rating.

This tool rates your products on a scale from 1-10. The ratings are as follows:

1-2 (Green category) = Low hazard

3-6 (Yellow category) =  Moderate hazard

7-10 (Red category) = High Hazard

As I said, ignorance is bliss but it’s not worth the harm some of our household items are causing us. Hope this makes it easier for you to decide on which products to toss and replace in your home. Happy searching!
