Natural Beauty Product of the Week: Clove + Hallow Lip Velvets

January 9, 2018

I have always loved to play around with makeup. I am no make up professional but it has always been my jam. When I switched to green beauty, I didn’t have any leads to the amazing green beauty brands I know and love today. I didn’t have an Instagram account, green beauty wasn’t showcased in major magazines like it is starting to be now, and stores didn’t sell brands that were natural at the time. So I took to google, and though it took me years to find the brands I love to date, I have tried so many makeup lines with clean ingredients. That being said, I have tried it all and I am incredibly strict with my rule of natural dupes having to perform just as well or BETTER than the conventional brands I once loved. The reason? I knew I would revert back to toxic options if I didn’t love the healthy swaps. This is why I tell anyone who wants to switch to green beauty that you have to find your perfect fits. Nowadays there are more brands using clean ingredients, more influencers that are sharing their passion for natural beauty and more brands creating clean and high performing products.

Thank you for supporting my little green space on the internet. *

I really have tried it all but every once in a while a new brand shows up on the block and I am floored. This is the case with new green beauty makeup line Clove + Hallow. The line was created by a  makeup artist who refused to continue using toxic ingredients on herself and her clients.. so she took to the creator role and made her own line. Well, she basically created magic. So I am going to share my love for these lip velvets which became one of my top discoveries in 2017 (they squeaked in right at the very end).

If you are a makeup lover, you certainly have perused the shelves of Sephora from time to time and have likely stumbled upon a much loved brand called Smashbox. It performs at a very high level and I fell head over heels for their liquid matte lipsticks many years ago.. The problem? I don’t use toxic ingredients in my beauty products anymore so my sad parting with the line was a bit of a bummer. I hadn’t found a swap for the product until I found Clove + Hallows Lip Velvets. I actually found that they lasted longer and budged LESS than smash box.. this fact was confirmed when someone at our Christmas Family Dinner asked what lip product I was wearing purely because of how it lasted through dinner. Now that I found her line, I am just waiting for her to expand her colour palette because OMG the formula is something else.

So I decided I would grab myself one of Clove + Hallow’s Limited Edition Lip Velvet Trio Sets (which are available for the holidays while supplies last) to test out some of the shades in her line. I WAS expecting to like them, as I had already heard that the brand was good.. but then I applied the lipsticks and was floored. I had no idea it was going to be the replacement for my beloved smash box.. this hadn’t even crossed my mind as a possibility. In fact, I thought I was just getting three lip glosses that were going to be your regular run of the mill product but I can’t tell you how happy I am that I decided to ‘Add to Cart’ that day. It was on a whim and a very lucky one at that. These Lip Velvets are now a staple in my makeup bag and I am going to tell EVERYONE. about. them.

So here we go.. I am going to swatch the shades I have for you so you can see how bonkers (in the best way) this brand is. Each Lip Velvet are $18.00 on their own which is a great value for the quality you receive and on par with most lipstick costs. The Lip Velvet Trio is $45 for three shades which is a fantastic value (you basically get 3 velvets for a little over the cost of just one smash box liquid lipstick.. that ain’t bad).

Cup Cake – Medium Nude with Brown undertone

THIS shade actually perfectly replaces one of my favourite smash box colours. It is an exact dupe.. and is the shade I’m most excited for. I especially love the shade for it’s ode to Kelly and Donna circa 1990 something in the original 90210. Anyone who watched the show will totally know what I mean when they see this shade.

Uptown – Medium to Deep Berry

This shade was one I wasn’t convinced I would care for. Berry shades can sometimes look too elementary for me and they usually have less sophistication to them. That couldn’t be further from the truth with this shade. It has an edge to it so you look extra glam and compliments my skin tone when I thought it was going to totally clash. I am going to have this on repeat during the holidays because what better time to rock a berry shade than the Winter.

Sugar Bear – Medium – Deep Nude

Sugar Bear was the first shade I tried on when I received the trio and this shade gave the best first impression. It is similar to uptown but is more of a muted tone (drop the berry). I think this shade will be perfect for Fall AND Winter (it might even look stellar when I manage to get a bit of a tan ..keywords: a bit.. during the summer. Shades always tend to look dramatically different when I’m not my regular shade of pale but I’ll have to report back to you on this when Canada isn’t playing twins with the North Pole.

These Lip Velvets are undoubtedly one my best beauty finds of 2017. I wasn’t sure it would be possible to find a cleaner version of a long lasting matte liquid lipstick without compromising a bit on quality but as always, someone managed to find the perfect formula to prove me wrong. Even as an avid green beauty promoter, I sometimes let the myth that green beauty is somehow “less than” creep in. This couldn’t be farther from the truth and I’m always so happy when a brand comes along that reminds me that it truly is “just a myth”. My #1 suggestion when switching to green beauty is to find products that replace your favourites that work equal to or BETTER than them.. that way you will never have the urge to switch back to conventional products. Products like these Lip Velvets are why I am continuously on the hunt for natural dupes to share with you all.
