Thieves Natural Household Cleaner Review + DIY Recipes + Dilution Ratios

July 5, 2020

Cleaning my home is something I like to keep up and I especially like knowing that the products I’m using are natural as well as effective. We all know essential oils can be great tools to keep surfaces clean and get rid of pesky germs, but it’s important to get the right blend of oils to ensure you are effectively managing household germs and grime. I had always dabbled in Thieves cleaning products but when my Daughter enrolled into her first year of Kindergarten I wanted to ensure that I was managing all those germs that were headed my way each day. Previous to school, I had her home with me and while I still maintained a clean home I wanted to make sure I achieved a deeper clean without compromising on keeping conventional cleaning products out of my home. My only regret was that I hadn’t bought the entire Thieves kit sooner. I had started with the thieves essential oil to diffuse into the air at home, their foaming hand soaps, hand sanitizer, fruit and veggie soak, and concentrated cleaner and LOVED them. But adding in the laundry soap, toothpastes, on the go sanitizing spray (hello dirty shopping cart handles), and dish soap were an even bigger game changer.

As always, I will only recommend brands that have passed my seal of approval and that I truly love.. these commissions help to cover Bloom + Clementine’s fees so that this website can stay alive and I can continue sharing my green beauty passion with you all. Thank you for supporting my little green space on the internet. *

The products are all incredibly concentrated which means I can dilute them with purified water to ensure they last (and they do!). Then I worked out the cost savings of purchasing a kit every 3-4 months rather than purchasing them separately like I had been. The savings are huge and I replenish my household cleaning stock about 3-4 times a year. They’re dropped conveniently at my door and I don’t have to go to a bunch of different stores to grab all of my natural products anymore.

I’m going to include dilution ratios below so you can extend the life of all of your thieves cleaners. I also use them to make all kinds of DIY cleaning options (I’m going to share the recipes for all of my favourite do it yourself cleaners too!).

Thieves is one of the most popular lines in Young Living and it’s not surprising. I wish I had been using these products all along. My house smells like mulled cinnamon and cloves mixed with sweet citrus fruits. It’s the most effective clean, without the toxic chemicals AND I feel like I’m swimming in the most beautiful and comforting aroma all day. So what is it about these plant based natural cleaning products that have everyone hooked?

.

What is Thieves?

Thieves is a trademarked blend put together by Young Living. They’ve created an entire line based on this oil blend of natural household cleaning products. They all come incredibly concentrated so I dilute them to keep them lasting longer. My personal favourites are the essential oil itself (which I diffuse 6-8 drops to eliminate odour/airborne particles), I also clean my carpets with the oil (mix into baking soda to sprinkle over carpets then vacuum up to disinfect & refresh), I am a big fan of their foaming hand soaps that sit at every sink in my home, their fruit & veggie soak that I use to wash my organic produce before putting away after each shop, the laundry soap that cleans effectively, keeps clothing soft and them smelling divine, and the cleaning concentrate that I make my own all purpose cleaners out of by diluting them into amber bottles. Not to mention, all of the Thieves line is incredibly concentrated so you can dilute and save over time. It’s economical, saves you money, cleans effectively, is good for the environment and isn’t filled with harsh chemicals that can affect good health.

This famous blend is comprised of: clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus and rosemary essential oils. It carries with it some impressive benefits such as its ability to clean the air, cut bacteria, and immune support when diffused. Diffuse this blend all Winter during cold and flu bug season. Perfect for families who have little ones bringing home all of those pesky school germs.

It’s also famous for its ability to deep clean home surfaces. It has been my go to household cleaner for a long time and I’ve now used the entire line since sending my eldest to Kindergarten where germs were inevitably going to come home to us. This saved my sanity while I had a newborn simultaneously.

.

History of the Thieves Blend

Thieves blend is connected to a historic legend. As the story goes, the Black Plague had hit France and it was virtually impossible to avoid contracting. Four thieves were caught and charged with looting from people’s homes. They managed to avoid ever contracting the plague during their looting despite being in close quarters and contact. They divulged that they had drenched themselves in a blend of oils (now known as thieves) and believed this was what gave them their free pass.

Product by Product Review

Thieves Essential Oil

This has been my go to diffuser blend for years. Not only does it smell like crisp autumn melding into Christmas time with its warm spicy and sweet aroma of citrus, cinnamon and cloves but it’s been known to clean the air space. One study was conducted on the effects of thieves oil blend diffused into the air. They found the air space was significantly cleaner within 10 minutes of diffusing (Chao, S.C, 1998).

Thieves essential oil is also a fantastic immune support.

Medicinal Ingredients:

Clove essential oil (Syzgium aromaticum – Flower bud) 43.823%

Non-Medicinal Ingredients:

Citrus limon peel essential oil

Cinnamomum zeylanicum bark essential oil

Eucalyptus radiata leaf/stem essential oil

Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary) leaf essential oil

†100% pure, YLTG™ essential oil

• Thieves Cleaner Concentrate

This cleaner is my go to in our home and I use it in countless DIY cleaner recipes. It’s versatile and potent. One bottle lasts me months as you require so little at a time. I have provided dilution ratios and recipes below, so keep this post bookmarked for future reference.

Mix these up and you’ve got a budget friendly, effective, and beautiful smelling cleaner for your home. For those who have never smelled thieves, it’s the most beautiful sweet and spicy aroma. Mulled spices of cinnamon and clove mixed with citrus of lemon and other deep cleaning essential oils. My very favourite fresh and comforting scent.

Ingredients:

Water, Alykl polyglucoside, Sodium 2-methyl sulfolaurate, Eugenia caryophyllus† (Clove) bud oil, Citrus limon† (Lemon) peel oil, Tetrasodium glutamate diacetate, Cinnamomum zeylanicum† (Cinnamon) bark oil, Rosmarinus officinalis† (Rosemary) leaf oil, Eucalyptus radiata† leaf oil, Disodium 2-sulfolaurate

†100% pure, therapeutic-grade essential oil

• Thieves Laundry Soap

This laundry soap smells just as beautiful as the entire line thanks to the Essential oil blend. It’s natural plant based formula leaves behind no chemical residues or harsh synthetic chemicals like conventional detergents. The best part is this laundry soap is VERY concentrated. You can get about 64 loads out of one bottle of this laundry detergent, making it an economical and environmentally friendly option. For those worried if it will perform just as well as conventional cleaners, it contains stain fighting enzymes to keep your clothing looking great as well as the thieves oil blends which leaves a beautiful scent while also working to remove bacteria and germs in the wash. In fact, this cleaner can also be used as a pre-stain treatment before washing (I’ve included a stain remover recipe in my DIY section below).

** Note: Compatible with high-efficiency (HE) washing machines **

Free from SLS, dyes, petrochemicals, formaldehyde, phosphates, synthetic perfume, and optical brighteners

Laundry detergent is one of the most toxic products sold on the market, and this is what we use to clean our clothes that we wear against our bodies all day long. Go grab your laundry detergent and check the ingredient label for these toxic ingredients. If they contain any of these, you need to switch your laundry soap! Highly Toxic ingredients to avoid in laundry detergent:

• Sodium Lauryl Sulfate/Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLS/ SLES): This is added as a foaming agent but is toxic and causes inflammation and irritation to eyes, nose, throat, skin, lungs and damage to internal Organs

• Phosphates: Linked to cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and death

• Formaldehyde: This is well known as the chemical used to preserve and embalm dead bodies. It is listed as a known carcinogen/proven to cause cancer

• Chlorine Bleach: dangerous to skin and eyes. Can cause severe respiratory issues

• Ammonium Sulfate: an oral, skin and respiratory toxin

• Dioxane (1,4 Dioxane/ Diethylene Dioxide): liquid fumes are known to spontaneously combust and it is a known carcinogen to humans. This causes damages to the central nervous system as well as major organs.

• Optical/UV Brighteners: an eye, skin, and lung irritant

• Ammonium Quaternary Sanitizers (Synthesized Cationic Surfactants): an eye, skin, and lung irritant

• Nonylphenol Ethoxylates (Nonoxynol, NPEs): exposure to these fumes can be fatal. An an eye, skin, and lung irritant

• Fragrance (Parfum): Fragrance is an umbrella term and manufacturers are not required to list any of its contents. They can contain 1000s of harmful ingredients in this one label and are a major endocrine disruptor to humans (hormones)

• Dyes: Dyes cause cancer and are endocrine disruptors (hormones)

• Benzyl Acetate: Roxic to the central nervous system and major organs

• Dichlorobenzene (P-Dichlorobenzene/ Benzene): Carcinogenic to humans

This is something I suggest making the switch from. Laundry detergent is one of the most offensive products to human health and many of these ingredients should never be allowed for human use. My household has always used Thieves. Plant based, natural, gets stains out better than anything I’ve ever used.

Ingredients:

Water, Decyl glucoside, Sodium oleate, Glycerin, Caprylyl glucoside, Lauryl glucoside, Sodium chloride, Sodium gluconate, Carboxymethyl cellulose, Alpha-amaylase, Protease, Lipase, Citrus Limon† (Jade lemon) peel oil, Citrus aurantium bergamia† (Bergamot) peel oil (Furocoumarin-free), Syzygium aromaticum† (Clove) bud oil, Citrus limon† (Lemon) peel oil, Cinnamomum zeylanicum† (Cinnamon) bark oil, Eucalyptus radiata† oil, Rosmarinus officinalis† (Rosemary) leaf oil

Thieves Foaming Hand Soap

Thieves foaming hand soap is the only hand soap we have in our home sitting at every sink. It’s what I feel most comfortable using for my little ones hands and it’s a plant based, natural, gentle and effective alternative to harsh chemical hand soaps loaded with hormone disrupting fragrance and perfume. The best part about these soaps is that it still leaves your hands smelling amazing thanks to the natural essential oil blend of Thieves. If you love a beautiful smelling hand soap but want a natural option then this will be your new favourite option. Goodbye Bath & Body Works, Hello Thieves!

They also have a large bottle of concentrated refill. So when your foaming bottles run out, you can keep refilling them rather than purchasing new bottles each time. This is both good for the environment and your wallet. The bottle says that it will make four bottles of hand soap but I have personally found that it can make at least 8. As most thieves products, it’s very concentrated and the foaming bottle itself is what creates the soft foaming texture. So don’t throw out your empty foaming bottles!

Ingredients:

Water, Decyl glucoside, Cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, Alcohol denat, Eugenia caryophyllus† (Clove) bud oil, Cetyl hydroxyethylcellulose, Citrus aurantium dulcis† (Orange) peel oil, Citrus limon† (Lemon) peel oil, Cinnamomum zeylanicum† (Cinnamon) bark oil, Eucalyptus radiata† leaf oil, Rosmarinus officinalis† (Rosemary) leaf oil, Ginkgo biloba leaf extract, Camellia sinensis leaf extract, Sodium hydroxide, Tocopheryl acetate, Retinyl palmitate, Aloe barbadensis leaf juice, Citric acid

100% pure, therapeutic-grade essential oil

Thieves Dish Soap

If you’re looking for an alternative dish soap to get those dishes sparkling clean then this is my go to. It is concentrated which means you can add water and save some of the concentrated formula for later rather than using it all up in the one bottle. It cleans dishes, removes oil and grime just as effectively as other dish soaps, and it’s a plant based natural formula. I have always opted for natural dish soaps as these formulas are what you are washing your dishes and cutlery with which eventually go into your mouth. I feel it’s an important swap to make and this option is my very favourite.

As someone who only hand washes my dishes, I love that it is very gentle on the hands and doesn’t dry mine out. It smells bright and citrusy blended with the sweet mulled spices of thieves.

Contains no sulfates, dyes, formaldehyde, phosphates, or synthetic perfumes

Ingredients:

Water, Decyl glucoside, Sodium lauroyl lactylate, Lauryl glucoside, Sodium carbonate, Caprylyl glucoside, Citrus limon† (Lemon) peel oil, Citrus aurantium bergamia† (Bergamot) peel oil (Furocoumarin-free), Citrus limon† (Jade lemon) peel oil, Syzygium aromaticum† (Clove) bud oil, Cinnamomum zeylanicum† (Cinnamon) bark oil, Eucalyptus radiata† oil, Rosmarinus officinalis† (Rosemary) leaf oil

†100% pure, therapeutic-grade essential oil

Thieves Hand Sanitizer

Thieves hand sanitizer is what I carry around with me in my purse. It doesn’t contain any harsh chemicals like conventional sanitizers but works just as effectively. It’s documented to kill 99.99% of germs. This formula contains aloe vera and vegetable glycerin which keeps the hands from dehydrating and cracking while leaving them soft and smooth instead. It also contains the signature thieves blend which leaves your hands smelling beautiful.

* important to note: Thieves Hand Sanitizer is approved by Health Canada as an effective agent for sanitizing against virus *

Thieves Spray

The thieves spray is something I carry around with me in my purse to sanitize any surfaces on the go. Shopping carts, counter spaces, public toilets/faucets, door handles are all surfaces that I don’t mind giving a little spray before touching.

One study (Gerba, C. P., et Al 2012) found a significant link between the contraction of gastrointestinal bacterial infections and shopping cart contamination. It focused on the developing immune systems of small children who are often placed in carts without sanitization measures taken. The study focused on 3 gastro bacterial strains but touched on the fact that this contamination could be generalized to other contact driven infections, which include viral afflictions as well.

These are a few reasons why I carry this safe yet effective sanitizing spray around with me in my purse. You can spray down surfaces to protect yourself while also avoiding harsh chemicals that can be damaging to your skin and overall health.

Ingredients:

Alcohol denat., Water, Caprylic/capric triglyceride, Eugenia caryophyllus† (Clove) bud oil, Citrus limon† (Lemon) peel oil, Cinnamomum zeylanicum† (Cinnamon) bark oil, Eucalyptus radiata† leaf oil, Rosmarinus officinalis† (Rosemary) leaf oil, Lecithin, Quillaja saponaria extract

• Thieves Fruit & Veggie Soak

Anytime I receive an organic produce delivery or bring home my produce from a grocery store I wash it before putting away. While I buy organic fruits and vegetables, you still need to wash off dirt, debris and potential bacteria that were acquired by transport, cross contamination and the hands of those handling the food to the stores and delivery companies. You never know what could be sitting on your food, and if you purchase non-organic then it’s imperative that you soak your produce to rid them of pesticides and chemicals before ingesting. This fruit and veggie soak comes VERY concentrated. I simply place a cap full into a large sink and fill up with water and all of my produce. I let them soak and then rinse off with water before letting them air dry on a towel over the counter. These simple steps will help evade any potential run ins with harmful bacteria and food poisoning.

Not to mention, as with all of the thieves products, it smells amazing while the fruits and veggies are soaking.

Ingredients:

Water, Decyl glucoside, Glycerin, Citric acid, Sodium citrate, Artemisia dracunculus† (Tarragon) oil, Zingiber officinale† (Ginger) root oil, Mentha piperita† (Peppermint) oil, Juniperus osteosperma† oil, Foeniculum vulgare† (Fennel) oil, Cymbopogon flexuosus† (Lemongrass) oil, Syzygium aromaticum† (Clove) bud oil, Rosmarinus officinalis† (Rosemary) leaf oil, Cymbopogon nardus†(Citronella) oil, Pimpinella anisum† (Anise) seed oil, Citrus limon† (Lemon) peel oil, Pogostemon cablin† (Patchouli) oil, Cinnamomum zeylanicum† (Cinnamon) bark oil, Melaleuca alternifolia† (Tea tree) leaf oil, Lavandula hybrida† (Lavandin) oil, Eucalyptus radiata† oil, Myrtus communis† (Tunisian Myrtle) oil, Myrtus communis† (Moroccan Myrtle) oil

†100% pure, YLTG essential oil

Thieves Toothpaste

I avoid fluoridated toothpastes in my home for a variety of reason. Fluoride has been documented in studies to be harmful to humans when consumed and it can have a lasting effect on your health.

Essential oils in particular have been added to natural toothpaste brands for years as they are incredibly effective at maintaining oral hygeine. They also freshen your breathe naturally and leave the mouth feeling nice and clean. I love thieves’ natural toothpaste as it tastes great, leaves my mouth and breathe feeling fresh, and doesn’t contain any of the ingredients I avoid in conventional toothpaste brands. I feel toothpaste is an important swap as it is something you put directly into your mouth.

Ingredients:

Water, Calcium carbonate, Cocos nucifera (Coconut) oil, Sodium bicarbonate, Glycerin (Vegetable), Xylitol, Xanthum gum, Mentha piperita† (Peppermint) oil, Mentha spicata† (Spearmint) leaf oil, Eugenia caryophyllus (Clove) bud oil, Ocotea quixos† (Ocotea) leaf oil, Cinnamomum verum† (Cinnamon) Bark oil, Citrus limon† (Lemon) peel oil, Eucalyptus Radiata† leaf oil, Rosmarinus officinalis† (Rosemary) leaf oil, Stevia rebaudiana leaf extract, Lecithin (Sunflower).

.

DIY Recipes + Dilution Ratios:

• ALL PURPOSE CLEANER: 1 capful of thieves concentrate cleaner to 2 cups of purified water.

• LIGHT DEGREASING: 1 capful of thieves concentrated cleaner to 4 cups of purified water.

• HEAVY DEGREASING: 1 capful of thieves cleaner concentrate to 1 cup of purified water.

• WINDOW CLEANER: 1/8 tsp of cleaner concentrate, 1 tsp. vinegar, 2 cups water. Can add a few drops of lemon essential oil but not necessary.

• WOOD FURNITURE CLEANER & POLISH: 2 capfuls cleaner concentrate, 1 cup olive oil into a glass spray bottle and fill up the rest with distilled water.

• HOUSEPLANT SPRAY & LEAF CLEANER: 1 capful of thieves cleaner concentrate and 1 cup of filtered water in a spray bottle. Spray into soil and mist over leaves 1x/week. This spray will promote healthy green leaves, and new rapid growths on plants. Continue to water plants as usual.

• SOFT SCRUBBING POWDER: 1 cap full of concentrated cleaner, 1 cup of aluminum free baking soda, a few drops of lemon or purification essential oil. Add purified water to desired consistency. Mix these ingredients into a glass jar with a lid and use to scrub grimy hard to clean surfaces when needed.

• FLOOR CLEANER: 4 cups of water, 1 capful of thieves concentrated cleaner, 3 drops of lemon essential oil, 1 tsp. white vinegar.

• CARPET REFRESH POWDER: 8-10 drops of thieves essential oil blend and one cup of aluminum free baking soda. Mix together in a glass jar with lid. Sprinkle over carpets and let sit for 10-15 minute before vacuuming up the powder. This will eliminate bacteria and odour from carpets.

• SWEET & SPICY ROOM SPRAY: in a small glass spray bottle add 10-12 drops of thieves essential oil and 5 drops of orange essential oil. Fill the rest of the bottle up with filtered water. Spray into the air to eliminate odour and create a warm and comforting aroma.

• STAIN REMOVER: 1/2 dish soap, 1/2 cleaner concentrate. For really stubborn stains, add 1/3 cup of baking soda to this and mix together. Let sit on stains with cold water before washing for at least 30 minutes.

Water down concentrated thieves products. Besides the concentrated cleaner that can be diluted down to 1 cap full to 30 parts water and still be incredibly effective, there are other products in the thieves line that come very concentrated and can be watered down or used sparingly to last longer. They are the following:

-Thieves foaming hand soap

-Thieves Dish soap

-Thieves Laundry Detergent
